The nominees for the 79th Academy Awards were announced this morning, and "Dreamgirls" leads the pack with 8 nominations, including Best Supporting Actor for Eddie Murphy and Best Supporting Actress for Jennifer Hudson. Surprisingly, it did not receive nods for Best Picture or Best Director. "Dreamgirls" has long been considered the front runner to win both those awards. The nominees are:

In my mind, the real surprise here is Ryan Gosling. Not that he's on the list, but that he's even working in Hollywood and having sex with Rachel McAdams. He's so damn average, and she's so damn pretty. You could send me to do an interview with him, and replace him with a plank of wood that someone put a little hat on and I'm not positive I would even notice. I would just think he was being stuck up. And I dare you to make less sense than him and Rachel. Pictures of him with her make no sense, they don't even look real, it's like when you go to Universal Studios and get a picture of yourself shaking hands with President Bush or as Sportsmen of the Year. There's just no way this dork is really with this angel.

The Oscars are pretty much an irrelevant circle jerk. People who earn too much money gather round to slap each other on the back and tell each other how great they are. Anyone who is into film knows that the Oscars aren’t about film, it’s about politics and the ‘industry’. When was the last time the ‘best picture’ won the ‘Best Picture’ award? However, it does mean that all the players and hangers-on come out in public so that we can make fun of them, so not a total loss…

There’s no way that the crusty, self-righteous, overtly-liberal gladhanders at the Academy will award such a nihilistic, violent and darkly funny film like “The Departed” with it’s top honors, but GOD-DAMMIT, I’m pulling for it. Here here, Marty. You truly are the best.

Slow sleaze day, eh? Ok, here’s my comments. Eddie Murphy is clearly getting a “make-good” nomination to compensate for the times he was unfairly ignored (The Nutty Professor, The Adventures of Pluto Nash), but I think he’s on a roll, if the adds for “Norbit” mean anything (and I think they DO). And if Scorsese didn’t get an Oscar for “Boxcar Bertha,” he sure as hell ain’t getting one for some lame commercial piece of exploitation (DiCaprio and Damon?) aimed at the readers of “Tiger Beat.” Of course, the last movie I saw in a theatre was “Garfield: A Tale of Two Kitties,” so what the hell do I know?
I just think it is supremely awesome that Beyonce got upstaged, again. Yes, that is some genuine hate that you smell.
