Yesterday Oliver Stone was the center of attention after an interview with the Sunday Times of London in which he said that Jews run the media and Hitler was a “scapegoat”. He seems concerned that history has labeled Hitler and Stalin as evil, so he’s making a new documentary to help people, “walk in Stalin’s shoes and Hitler’s shoes to understand their point of view”.
In other words, don’t get all PC just because Stalin killed 20 million of his own people between 1936 and 1938. Hindsight is always 20/20. Did Hitler go overboard when he executed 14 million Jews, Gypsies, POW’s, homosexuals and the handicapped, or is it time they took some responsibility for being unpure? You may think you know the answer, but Oliver Stone hopes you can keep an open mind. Look, we can play the blame game all day, but a bunch of finger pointing isn’t gonna solve anything.
If all you focus on is the time in 1933 when Stalin had 6000 of his own people rounded up and dumped on a remote island with no food or shelter, meaning they were forced to start killing and eating each other, well then of course Stalin is gonna look evil. Lots of ideas can look bad if you put them under a microscope, but do a few isolated incidents make someone a bad person? Who are we to judge? That’s all Stone was trying to say.
But now it’s 24 hours later, and Stone understands some people might not be so open minded, so he wants to apologize. Not for defending the indefensible however, just for the part that’s kind of true and actually sort of a compliment.
“In trying to make a broader historical point about the range of atrocities the Germans committed against many people, I made a clumsy association about the Holocaust, for which I am sorry and I regret. Jews obviously do not control media or any other industry. The fact that the Holocaust is still a very important, vivid and current matter today is, in fact, a great credit to the very hard work of a broad coalition of people committed to the remembrance of this atrocity – and it was an atrocity.”
I don’t know if Jewish people run the media, but I can’t recite my phone number when asked to half the time either, so just because I don’t know the answer is hardly proof that it doesn’t exist. It seems like they at least run Hollywood. If not, then who keeps making these movies about handsome Jewish rebels hunting down Nazis? Is it the Swiss? The Japanese? I’m gonna bet it’s someone Jewish.
I don’t really have a problem with this. There is nothing wrong with changing historical perspective as long as facts and detail remain unchanged.
