The Internet loves a feel good story. I’m sure Upworthy is A/B testing emotionally provocative headlines for this tale of a girl abandoned by her mom just after birth in a Burger King bathroom in Allentown, Pennsylvania. Like most kids who were left on top of a white plastic sheet in a fast food toilet, Katheryn Deprill always wondered what became of her mom. At age 27, Katheryn finally took to Facebook with a simple plea, help me find my bio mom.
“Looking for my birth mother. She gave birth to me September 15, 1986. She abandoned me in the Burger King bathroom only hours old, Allentown, PA. Please help me find her by sharing my post. Maybe she will see this. Thank you.”
Who wouldn’t respond to such a heartfelt plea to reunite these two? The story spun around the web and in short order, toilet dumping mom saw the story and did what any woman in her position would do, she hired a lawyer to maintain her anonymity. The lawyer contacted Katheryn to arrange an in-person meeting. Just like that, mother and daughter met in the legal offices and hugged as if it was just yesterday mom left her in a cute red sweater on the piss-covered floor of the Burger King. Birth mother explained her classic tale of being a seventeen year old girl raped while traveling abroad and having to hide her pregnancy from her family. Her lawyer explained in a reflexive CYA that mom’s decision to leave the hours old infant on the floor of the B.K. bathroom was the sensible option:
“She left the baby in a location where the baby would be found and cared for,”
Yes, unlike, say, a fire station, a police station, a hospital, or a school where nobody would notice a crying newborn. The clientele of your typical Burger King bathroom are widely acclaimed for their selfless acts of nurturing. The explanation seemed to make Katheryn feel whole again and that’s all that matters. The two agreed to stay in touch and be involved in each other’s lives. Meanwhile, Kathryn’s adopted mom stood in the background mumbling ‘That bitch left you in a toilet stall. Seriously? Now she’s your mom again? Fuck the both of you.’.
