John Mellencamp Meant to Be More Special

John Mellencamp’s small town incest survivor anthem “Jack and Diane” was changed from its original version. Mellencamp recently stated the song was supposed to be about a black guy boning a white girl but the record company made him change it and Mellencamp went along because people are only artists when they can afford to be. The original line in the song according to Mellencamp, adjusted for the phony backwoods accent was:

“Jack is gonna be a football star, Diane’s a debutante in backseat of Jackie’s car.”

Mellencamp claims the original version was much more incendiary, although only towards racist Southerners, as Jack was supposed to be black:

“Originally the line was Jack was not a football star, Jack was an African American.”

I am almost certain the line was not “Jack was an African American.” Maybe the record company had a point because Mellencamp seems to be withholding some pertinent details and it seems more than likely a racial slur was involved to try and get a little rebel notoriety.

Mellencamp may be destined to die in a small town, but in the meantime he’s living in Manhattan with Meg Ryan and getting some vivacious hair plugs implanted in his scalp. If he wanted to stay true to his roots, he could’ve done what Neil Young did and pluck an unwashed Daryl Hannah out of a tree and ask her if she wanted to save the world with him singing songs in the back of a rusty pickup truck. I’m going to chalk this up to some revisionist history and attempting to turn a career of ditties into a meaningful contribution to social progress. Seeing Meg Ryan’s plastic surgery scars during sex can cause a man to measure his legacy.
