Two years ago when Natalie Erlich was a seventeen year old high school student she was approached by a plainclothes cop on too much coffee named Jose Peinan who started chatting her up about choir class and waffle houses. At some point Erlich got creeped out by Travis Bickle’s lower functioning brother and asked if he was a cop. Most people with crew cuts don’t loiter. At that point Peinan summoned a van of four officers who arrested Erlich and her friend and charged them with Obstruction of Governmental Administration after illegally detaining them for 19 hours. Erlich and her friend filed a lawsuit against NYC alleging Peinan had arrested her because he was “angered at having his advances rebuffed.” Last week the charges were dropped and Erlich was awarded $45,000 for her troubles. Don’t hire your lawyer off of a park bench.
Peinan has been named in three other lawsuits which the city has been forced to settle though word on the street is his breathtaking pension remains firm. I’m hoping that 45k was a lump sum because I’m hitting up Erlich on Facebook. Meet me tonight in Atlantic City. I want to do some motorboating on a gondola. What are you hiding in there?
