The ESPY’s switched things up this year by naming somebody courageous to be the recipient of the Arthur Ashe Courage Award. Zaevion Dobson was a Tennessee high school football player who threw himself on top of three girls during a drive by gang shooting, taking the bullets and saving their lives. Seems reasonably brave.
Last year’s winner was Bruce Jenner for the valor of getting fake tits and putting on a dress. ESPN constructed a portfolio of bullshit to support their choice of Jenner while not mentioning the fact that their sister network ABC scored the big ratings Diane Sawyer interview as quid pro quo. The year before, ESPN named Michael Sam the Courage Award winner for having the temerity to be openly gay so the NFL could force the St. Louis Rams to draft him before cutting him prior to the season. Close to that throwing yourself on the grenade bit, but a million miles apart in the small distinction.
Most people are happy to ignore the fact that major corporate media outlets are driven in large measure by political correctness and crass commercialism posing as political correctness. That seems relatively ignorant. Also dangerous. Major media shape public opinion and pressure political outcomes. Equating a repressed gay Malibu senior wanting to wear fabulous gowns and crush people with his car with a kid whose first instincts when shots are fired is to protect women and children has real consequences. Captain America can be a homosexual, he just can’t carry a five thousand dollar designer clutch and lunch at Barney’s.
