Gawker Goes Under

June 10, 2016 | WTF | Lex Jurgen | 0 Comments

Media outlet and occasional libeler Gawker has filed for bankruptcy. Hulk Hogan’s jury verdict of $140 million against Gawker for giddily publishing a video of the pro wrestling star nonchalantly fucking his radio DJ friends wife was held up on appeal in court. Gawker owners were forced to fire sale the company to pay for a legally mandated bond against the full amount of the award. IGN and PC Magazine owners Ziff-Davis have already put in a bid of a hundred million for Gawker’s assets. Satan is still talking to his accountants and might counter.

Consider this a victory for gay billionaire vigilante Peter Thiel who vowed before the Seven Gods and a Kevin Spacey bobble-head a decade ago that he would destroy Gawker for unceremoniously outing him. Thiel funded Hogan’s lawsuit against the high profile gossip rag as well as those of others who would ultimately bring Gawker down in a flurry of Kombucha scented New York blogger waste.

Gawker founder and CEO Nick Denton could be respected for his willingness to never back down from a story. Or he could be called a self-righteous tool losing himself tens of millions of dollars over insisting Hulk Hogan revenge porn was journalism. It’s a fine line between hero and asshole. You can’t go wrong with the one where you don’t go bankrupt.
