Elena Della Donne Announces She’s Gay and Still Can’t Dunk

The time to make a splash with your lesbian coming out might be before you’re 6’5″ and pretend dunking in the WNBA. Or before posting Will You Marry Me girl on girl pictures on social media and having your chick help you rub down after games in the locker room. U.S. Women’s Olympic basketball player Elena Della Donne took the opportunity with the world watching in Rio to announce that she’s a lesbian and engaged to boot

Della Donne notes that her sexuality is no secret to her teammates since they’re all also all married to other chicks and wear denim jorts on weekends. Olympics teammate Sue Bird noted that the best part about Della Donne’s announcement is how it was no big deal:

“That’s probably the best part of the story is that it’s not a huge deal anymore. Definitely from a personal standpoint but from a society stand point, that’s where we wanted to get. We wanted be in this place where it’s not a big deal. We want to be in this place where you don’t even have to make an announcement. It’s a non-issue to me in a lot of ways.”

So we’re in the place where where it’s a non-issue, but not the place yet where you don’t have to make an announcement. The worst of both worlds for those of us who just want to enjoy the triumph of women’s basketball in peace.

Della Donne recently complained that the press focuses too much on her looks as a woman and not her ball playing ability. Then she got naked in ESPN’s Body Issue to discuss her celebrity Lyme disease and announced she digs scissor kissing. That ought to help. If only the juvenile male sports press had other more important athletic events to cover.
