Male pop stars are likely to be scandal plagued everywhere. It’s in a man’s nature to live as fast and hard and sex-filled as he is able. If that’s poking the wife once a week before bed or banging seven groupies in a cocaine clouded orgy, it’s all about taking what you can get.
Korean recording artist and TV show host Jung Joon-Young got himself into a pickle when some chick he had been banging on video didn’t take their breakup well and filed a police report against him for filming her against her will, which is tantamount to sexual assault. The woman later recanted and filed an appeal letter on Joon-Young’s behalf saying it was all consensual and the police don’t need to investigate. But Korean tabloids tore Joon-Young a new one for being a sexual predator, in between hawking his new licensed merchandise on their pages. Journalism is a funny business.
This shit goes on all the time with Bieber and Chris Brown and their ilk domestically, but unlike those radically unlikable a-holes, Korean kids remain bound to a standard of shaming and humiliation that rises above even their desire to be rich dicks driving a Lamborghini. Joon-Young arranged a press conference in which he apologized to his nation and family for becoming the subject of a sex scandal, including a deep bow of regret. I don’t speak Korean, I barely handle English, but the guy seemed particularly humbled for having his family name mentioned in a negative light.
Not everything culturally Asian is superior to that culturally American. There’s an economic and political upside through the years of bravado and brashness and never saying sorry. But when it comes to 20-something prick pop stars expressing remorse, they’ve got us beat hands down on the authenticity. If this dude had beat a woman in the face, he might’ve disemboweled himself on that podium. There remains no school like the old school.
