Harry Potter Calls Hollywood Racist and Homophobic

Danielle Radcliffe mentioned in an interview that the film industry is undeniably racist and tough on gay actors. Which is odd in the context of almost every single person in the industry labeling themselves as socially super progressive. Though only odd if you don’t drill down one honest thought level.

We like to think of ourselves as being a very, very progressive industry, but we have been lagging behind in all kinds of areas.

Radcliffe is currently playing an undercover FBI agent infiltrating a neo-Nazi skinhead group. Entertainment reporters insist upon asking actors social questions contextually relevant to themes or characters in their movies. It’s an inane leap of logic that forces movie actors to provide answers on topics they know little to nothing about.

To be fair to Harry Potter, if you don’t state that Hollywood is unfair to minorities and gay and lesbians, you’re going to unnecessarily damage your career prospects. Maybe you believe it, maybe you don’t, you’re not getting that big promotion at Chevron touting your environmental call to acton blog.

Hollywood is a shitty industry filled with shitty people. But by and large, not racist. Also the most gay industry in the nation, just edging out male preschool teachers and flight attendants. Like most every other business ever devised, this one cares entirely about money. There is no plantation Colonel devising casting schemes to exclude minorities, there’s a dude with an MBA and a TI-55 calculating how much based on what colors. Kevin Hart in nineteen movies a year explains it all quite nicely. In contrast, good luck finding a black kid who ever got into Hogwarts.
