Amoeba Record Store Be Gone

September 16, 2016 | WTF | Lex Jurgen | 0 Comments

Vintage record store Amoeba Records had to respond to a flurry of concerned Tweets after their iconic Hollywood storefront was nowhere to be seen in a developer’s publicized future luxury condo building on the very same address. A thousand guys in short sleeve deck shirts and ironic fedoras simultaneous groaned about gentrification from their overpriced studio apartments. Amoeba owners reassured their fans that they’ve spoken to the folks who recently paid $34 million for the property on which their store stands and they are entirely open to the indie record store remaining. The expensive prototype of the 20-story upscale residential building with a rooftop pool probably just a lark. Hey, how do you feel about your monthly rent tripling, you know, for starters?

It’s easy to lament the ever evolving market landscape and that fact that your personal commercial fetish doesn’t necessarily warrant a city block sized brick and mortar storefront on Sunset Boulevard prime real estate. I know I have to go to side streets when I want a Thai massage. And side streets of those same side streets if I want to leave with a smile. My Dungeons and Dragons collectible store isn’t on the site of future 200-unit x $850,000 condo complex. The day it is, I’ll cry troll tears too.

Trading Edgar Winter 45’s will now transition fully to garage sales and thrice a year flea market top-line promos. The way God intended. Between cherishing the past and abandoning all traditions for the sake of progress lies a happy middle ground. Made happier by a sick rooftop pool that overlooks The Dome theater. Until that’s demoed for an Urban Outfitters. Money carves canyons much faster than mountain run-off.
