LeBron James is wearing a safety pin on his lapel on the cover of Sports Illustrated, where he was just named the gender neutral Sportsperson of the Year. The safety pin is meant to show solidarity with those who feel disenfranchised by Trump winning the election. While they may have some legitimate cause for concern, the safety pin is a total poser move and stupid idea.
James campaigned for Hillary in the general election yet didn’t vote in the primaries. In fact a quick search turns up the fact he hasn’t voted in any election since 2004, and that’s while living in the swing states of Ohio and Florida. LeBron is everything that’s wrong with this country. He fancies himself socially conscious. He publicly identifies himself as part of an oppressed group. He wears all the badges. All the while helping his brand by the way. But he doesn’t vote.
You probably shouldn’t base your vote on what an athlete who hardly graduated from high school thinks, and you definitely shouldn’t listen to some blowhard who didn’t vote drone on and on when it takes about ten minutes to cast a ballot by mail.
It’s fairly obvious he doesn’t care. He just wants to appear to care. A few votes will cancel out all the safety pins in the world worn by all the bleeding hearts on Twitter too lazy to hit the polls. That’s what’s going to change things. Not safety pins. You look really cute though.
