Finally, Breastfeeding in Parliament

May 10, 2017 | celebrity | Lex Jurgen | 0 Comments

A Green Party senator in Australia, which remains a country we talk about a lot despite being largely unpopulated and globally insignificant, became the first woman ever to breastfeed her baby during a live session of Parliament. It was a crowning achievement that nobody seemed to care about save for the senator, Larissa Waters. She formulated the bill to allow breastfeeding in Parliament, got it passed because nobody cared, waited for a big vote to start feeding her infant, then posted the photos to social media with a note about how Parliament needs more women and parents. Why are you smiling so much? Oh, that’s right, you told the guy to take your picture.

Classic self-promo methodology. If you can’t save the Barrier Reef, make the Senate into a place where suckling is formally condoned. There are probably other parents in the Australian Parliament. Don’t be fooled by the fact they weren’t breastfeeding on camera. There’s barbies out there with no shrimps on them. Somebody has to do the real work.

Breastfeeding advocacy among cheery blond women in the Western world seems rather half-hearted. Compared to say, doing the very same thing in Riyadh. Now that’s a Twitter photo. Hang it up over the coffin at the memorial. Like fat shaming, nursing shaming exists almost entirely as a source of drummed up victimization. In the rare cases where it occurs, it’s other women ragging. Men know better than to say shit to women about nursing in public if in the odd circumstance it rankles them. When Pelosi starts stuffing her leathery tit into a grandkids mouth to score political points, this calculation might change.
