Domestic violence and abuse is never okay and the some of the acts included under the terms need to be reclassified under another definition. Because what Demi Lovato’s dad did in the past should count as domestic terrorism or at least fall on the borderline of it. Patrick Lovato no longer loved Demi’s mother, Dianna Lovato, and decided that it was a good idea to start kicking her ass instead of asking for a divorce. Dianna details in her Falling with Wings: A Mother’s Story memoir that her ex-husband is the reason she no longer has one of her fingers. While it would have sold more books if she lied and said he sawed it off after an argument, she kept things truthful and said he slammed her finger in a door.

Dianna wed Patrick Lovato in 1984, and their marriage soon turned volatile. The couple welcomed their first daughter, Dallas, in 1988; Pat’s substance abuse spiraled out of control, and he couldn’t hold a job. Soon after, an enraged Pat slammed a door so hard on Dianna’s hand that she lost a finger. Dianna was deeply distressed but stayed with her husband because, two months later, she learned she was pregnant again.

Vivid descriptions of the trials and tribulations associated with escaping domestic violence coupled with a daughter who currently competes with names like Charlie Puth for best pop artist is a classic underdog success story. There’s no way that she won’t get an invite to Oprah Winfrey’s Book Club. As long as there are no fairy tales found in her non-fiction and she doesn’t go full James Frey with A Million Little Pieces. Once you publicly embarrass Oprah you automatically end up on her bad side. The last thing anyone wants to see is her crony Dr. Phil attempting to introduce his Goodyear tires to your kneecaps  because you lied about how you really lost your finger.
