GQ Magazine decided to milk as much controversy out of a story that stopped being interesting six months ago by naming Michael Sam the GQ Man of the Year. You may recall Michael Sam as the first openly gay football player drafted into the NFL who was later cut by two teams and never played a single down in the NFL. Like Jackie Robinson if Jackie had had zero plate appearances instead of 5,800, and not been named an All-Star six times, won Rookie of the Year and MVP honors. Also, if this were 1947 and people were throwing rocks at Michael Sams’s head and forcing him to sleep in separate quarters from his teammates and boycotting games he played in and intentionally trying to injure him during ball games. Still, it’s a thing he did that deserves some merit. I believe GQ Man of the Year constitutes some merit. Not too much, not too little, just enough to make out with your boyfriend again in front of the cameras in case anybody forgot you were gay for five minutes.
