It took me almost a week to get through the pre-jail screed of Lauryn Hill. She posted it to her Tumblr account so that it wouldn’t get distorted by the white media establishment. It’s really fucking long. And lame. And written by somebody who thinks they are profound. It goes on and on and on, but basically boils down to ‘I don’t have to pay my taxes because I’m black.’ Everybody in the process of her trial and sentencing on tax evasion charges was apparently oblivious to how slavery means Lauryn Hill doesn’t owe the government shit. She will never be ‘made whole’ again because of colonial imperialism. I’m sure Lauryn Hill is earnest about her own poorly constructed beliefs. But even people who have actual cases know not to fuck with the IRS. If Lauryn’s got any gumption, she’ll take her ancestral rage and turn it into an album. System of a Down made two platinum albums out of the Armenian genocide. I bet Lauryn’s got at least one radio play song in her about her life in virtual shackles.
Former Fugees singer and critically-acclaimed rap artist Lauryn Hill recently announced that after 15 years she’d finally be recording a follow-up to her critically-acclaimed solo album, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill. But despite her claims, it wasn’t because she wanted to answer her fans’ prayers and reward them with another masterpiece, as much as it was because Sony would foot the bill for the $970,000 she owed the U.S. government.
Even with that money paid up, Lauryn was sentenced to three months in jail on Monday, and she wasn’t shy about putting the whole system on trial.
“I was put into a system I didn’t know the nature of,” the 37-year-old hip-hop diva said. “I’m a child of former slaves. I got into an economic paradigm and had that imposed on me.”
“I sold 50 million units now I’m up here paying a tax debt,” the Grammy winner and mother of six said. “If that’s not likened to slavery, I don’t know what is.” (NY Daily News)
I don’t know what is likened to slavery, either, but I’m pretty sure that it’s not being given the chance to make millions of dollars as a music icon. I understand Lauryn’s anger, but she should have just compared herself to Lindsay Lohan like the rest of us.

Lauryn Hill hasn’t recorded a complete solo album since 1998’s critically-acclaimed The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, despite her claims that she’s always writing new music. Basically, she’s like hip hop’s Axl Rose. But now, thanks to Hill’s massive tax debt that she incurred by not filing or paying her taxes between 2005 and 2007, Sony Worldwide Entertainment is finally bringing her fans a new album. Otherwise, she’ll probably go to prison.
Hill, though, posted on Tumblr that this has nothing to do with owing the government $500,000. Sometimes it just takes 15 years to make a decent album.
It took years for me to get out of the ‘parasitic’ dynamic of my youth, and into a deal that better reflects my true contribution as an artist, and (purportedly) gives me the control necessary to create a paradigm suitable for my needs. I have been working towards this for a long time, not just because of my current legal situation, but because I am an artist, I love to create, and I need the proper platform to do so.
She also claims that this is a matter of art vs. commerce, which is her fancy way of saying that she’d like to make music and keep all of the money. I don’t know if the IRS is on Tumblr, but I’m sure they’d post something like, “Tough tits, lady.”
