No one saw ‘Mission: Impossible 3’

Despite mostly positive reviews, ‘Mission: Impossible III’ opened to less than expected numbers this weekend, causing many to wonder if the poor public perception of star Tom Cruise may have been a factor. Opening in over 4000 theaters, ‘MI3’ made only $48 million over the weekend. Box office estimates had the movie making at least 65 million. The AP says:

Industry analysts had expected the movie to open in the range of “MI 2,” which debuted with $57.8 million from Friday to Sunday over Memorial Day weekend in 2000, and Cruise’s “War of the Worlds,” which premiered with $64.9 million from Friday to Sunday over Fourth of July weekend last year
