After years of looking gay, attending cosmetics and fashion events, and loudly asking waiters at restaurants what gay people like to order at the place, MTV Teen Wolf actor Charlie Carver announced publicly that he was gay.
As a young boy, I knew I wanted to be an actor. It was around that age that I also knew, however abstractly, that I was different from some of the other boys in my grade. Over time, this abstract ‘knowing’ grew and articulated itself through a painful gestation marked by feelings of despair and alienation, ending in a climax of saying three words out loud: ‘I am gay.’
You’re gay, you’re not a woman. You don’t have painful gestations. You’re from San Francisco. You live and work in Hollywood. You’ve been nestled in a safe space like a caterpillar in a brilliant but tasteful cocoon. You play a gay character on TV. It’s 2016. Those positive comments you receive are obligatory Nobody gives a fuck. Most especially the gay people who came out years ago when it meant something. The party needed the ice an hour ago. Go home.
