Hollywood Super Racist According to Study Searching for Super Racism

A completely unexpected report from the Institute for Diversity and Empowerment at the Annenberg School of Communications declared Hollywood to be somewhere between Jim Crow South lunch counters and the Goop email list in terms of racial diversity. The report follows on the heels of tons of Oscar related “Hollywood is whitewashed” charges entirely guessed at before thousands of people made wildly exaggerated Tweets. In the vein of every single other report from a grant-funded social research study, the study starts with a generally accurate premise and quickly devolves into a series of biased statistical reports to provide greatly misleading results.

The grad students and their dipped hair looked at speaking roles in films and television over a one year period to assess how many were white, black, Latino, women, LGBT, Asians, and a few other subcategories of wildly oppressed demographics. The study’s pre-eminent finding was that only 28.3% of speaking roles went to minorities while minorities make up 37.9% of the population. Like all diversity outcries of late, what they casually lowlight is that the African-American percentage of speaking roles are 12.2% which is almost precisely in line with the general population. For Latinos they completely disregarded Spanish language channels like Univision and Telemundo from their study even though those channels often meet or exceed CW and Fox and other networks in household viewing. Those networks are almost 100% Latino in casting and they are monstrous in production and acting jobs. Once again it’s mostly the Asians being screwed in film and TV roles. But nobody cares about the Asians. No, it’s true, I checked.

The study also looked at the percentage of characters who were LGBT within the same film and TV content. Researchers restricted themselves to characters who were overtly and directly identified as LGBT in their film or TV show. Could Uncle Jesse in the Dukes of Hazzard been gay? I don’t know, maybe. He liked bib overalls and he did live a bachelor’s existence. He wouldn’t have counted in this study because he wasn’t clearly identified by his sexuality. The very end goal of gay acceptance to just be a character, not a gay character, completely shat upon by the study. I bet the decision to fudge that one in the lab didn’t take long. Good results are good results.

The study concluded with some recommendations for creative inspiring fixes such as “script monitors” at the studios and networks to ensure more diversity in characters. That doesn’t sound the least bit Soviet. Or wrong. Or like you’re about to ruin film and television shows. It’s probably already too late. People who didn’t bother to read this study are already out front proclaiming how it backs up the #OscarsSoWhite’s worse fears. Yes, hashtags have fears.

Political correctness will eventually destroy this nation. It would be great if it could not destroy decent media content before the bitter end.
